Message	just posting them to the internet does not relenquish one's intellectual copyright and make them public domain. i understand why you might have assumed that using the pics would have been harmless, but i myself have had various works (images and text) that i created and have had used without permission or acknowledgement, and i know that quite frankly it can be very infuriating. check out http://whatiscopyright.org/ for more information.
